Mount Vernon Cruise

Today dawned beautifully. We had been looking forward to this day for awhile. Back in the Spring I noticed a deal on "Groupon" that I thought would be fun. A cruise up the Potomac River to see Mount Vernon was advertised and we agreed it would be a fun thing to do. Well, today's the day!

We spent last night in Waldorf, Maryland so we wouldn't have to get up so early to drive to Washington, DC, to embark on our journey. We left early enough in the day to be able to shop a little. As usual, our goal was to find some clothes for me, but Tommy was the lucky one today. Oh well! It was fun shopping in a different mall.

Our cruise was to leave the docks at 8:30 a.m. which meant we needed to board at 8:15. So we left our motel at 7:00 to be sure the traffic didn't make us late.

It's a good thing we did. DC drivers are crazy...just saying! We had buses and cars and cabs cutting us off, trying to run us over, blowing horns, etc. What an adventure!

We arrived with a few minutes to spare, got a parking spot really close and set out with our camera in hand.

The boat trip took about 1 1/2 hours and it was lovely! We saw Reagan National Airport, (I found it very interesting that the airport was built so close to the river!)

While cruising up the river, we passed under I95 and saw the Welcome to Virginia sign

We saw various old homes and buildings along the way...

And then finally, we saw MOUNT VERNON

Also on the grounds, is the grave of George Washington

The view of the Potomac River is beautiful

We got to see the kitchen area,

the curing room,
and in the museum we saw much of George Washington's life in pictures, maps, statues, etc. It was all very interesting and informative.
Young Washington, the surveyor

older Washington, the  General

George Washington's Inauguration.

Before we left, we saw the farm animals and surrounding grounds

Then we began our trip back to DC

this is a ship like ours that we passed as we were leaving Mt. Vernon

The previous three pictures are of General's Row. Now back to DC and an extra trip around the capitol building for pictures.

What a special day in and around our nation's Capitol.
